Source: FC Cincinnati close to deal with Nigerian center back

The MLS summer transfer window is opening next week and FC Cincinnati could be adding a defender as soon as the window opens.

A source familiar with the deal have told The Post that Nigerian center back Chidozie Awaziem is close to signing a deal to join the FC Cincinnati back line.

The 27-year-old defender just finished a stint with Portuguese Primeira Liga side Boavista, starting 22 matches for the club in 2023-24 and totaling 1,952 minutes.

Awaziem has also been called up to the Nigerian national squad, although his appearances for them has been few and far between.

The Nigerian was born in the town of Enugu, which happens to also be the hometown of FC Cincinnati midfielder Obinna Nwobodo.

It is thus far unclear how long the deal with Awaziem would be for, but the club will need immediate help with Matt Miazga and Nick Hagglund out for the season as well as Miles Robinson leaving for Olympic duty next week.
