RUMOR: FC Cincinnati interest in Argentinian CB Federico Fernández

As you of course know, the folks working away at The Post’s player rumor desk never sleep. That’s why, on the stroke of midnight, The Post were the very first FC Cincinnati outlet to tweet a player rumor.

The 33 year old Argentinian Center-back, currently playing in La Liga for Elche has popped up on the FC Cincinnati radar. Fernández has played the majority of his career in the UK having spent most of his time with Swansea City before moving to Newcastle in 2018. At the start of the 2022/23 season he moved to Elche on a free, signing a one year contract.

Now, at this point, there isn’t much to this rumor. And at the time of publication his arrival seems unlikely. But still, this is a player profile that would make sense in Cincinnati. A veteran defensive presence with years of top flight experience to bolster what is currently a backline light on experience.

An FC Cincinnati comparable would be Geoff Cameron. He won’t be here for years and years, but could provide an immediate boost.

Fernández made 32 appearance for the Argentinian national team but was not in the most recent World Cup winning squad. His national team years ended back in 2014, but did feature for the finalists in that year’s edition of the World Cup. Fernández also is on the list of just 8 Argentinian players to have made more than 150 appearances in the English Premier League.

In Spain, he has played just one full match, having last played on October 3rd. He has failed to make the bench for each of Elche’s matches since October 15th of last year.

His valuation on Transfermarkt is 1 million pounds, which would place him as the 12th most valuable player on FC Cincinnati’s roster according to the site.

Stay tuned to The Post for more updates on Fernández
